Mrs. Burnis holds a post-baccalaureate degree in elementary education with an early childhood education endorsement from Eastern Michigan University, and has spent the past ten years teaching in the state of Michigan. Prior to this, she had achieved a bachelor’s degree in food science and nutrition with minors in business management and communication, and built a career as a district manager for a large food service company. She then chose to work in the home as she raised three daughters, while serving, teaching, and leading in her community, particularly in Catholic ministries and the classroom setting. Experience in the early childhood intervention setting led Mrs. Burnis to pursue a career in education. Mrs. Burnis began her teaching career as a math intervention specialist. However, she discovered her calling, teaching religion to school-aged children, while she served as a second grade teacher at St. Patrick’s School in Brighton, Michigan. At St. Patrick’s School, she was a member of the Whole Family Committee of the School Advisory Council, and was named Teacher of the Year during the 2018-2019 academic year. She taught at St. Patrick’s School for seven years before joining the St. Francis de Sales School in 2020, as a teacher of middle school religion, and the sixth grade class. She holds an Advanced Catechist Certification as well as an Echoing the Mystery Certification, from the Diocese of Lansing. She is also certified in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Mrs. Burnis is thankful for the opportunity to humbly serve the children and families of St. Francis de Sales.
